LEARNING EXPERIENCES: (The (S) lessons are part of a set sequence)

  • (S1) Area-In this lesson the students construct a square meter and fill it with different information pertaining to a sqm. (2-3 periods. Needs blank A3 paper, double sided tape, meter rulers)

    • MAT.MS.5.8: 8.  find the area, perimeter and volume of regular quadrilaterals.
  • (S2) Finding the area of an irregular shape with 90 degree angles (1 period, print first)**

    • No BM on irregular shapes.
    • Teach students to break irregular shapes into smaller pieces to measure area and add them to find total area.
    • MAT.MS.5.8: 8.  find the area, perimeter and volume of regular quadrilaterals.
  • (S3) Area of a Triangle-Investigation 1 (1 period) Requires printing and scissors

    • MAT.MS.5.9: 9.  find the area and perimeter of triangles.
  • (S4) Area of a Triangle-Investigation 2 (1period)

    • MAT.MS.5.9: 9.  find the area and perimeter of triangles.
  • (S5) Area of a Triangle Practice (1 period)

    • MAT.MS.5.9: 9.  find the area and perimeter of triangles.
  • (S6) Polygons, Triangles and Rectangles.  Investigating the link between polygons, triangles and rectangles. Includes follow up practice where students find land area of the Pentagon. (1-2 periods/check comments on post)

    • No BM on irregular shapes but an inquiry based connection activity.
  • (S8)Bringing it all back together-(3-4 periods, includes follow up)-needs construction paper, glue, scissors, double sided tape, rulers, blue text book

    • MAT.MS.5.8: 8.  find the area, perimeter and volume of regular quadrilaterals.
  • (S Extension) Find and use formulas for a variety of 3D shapes. (check comment)

    • MAT.MS.5.7: 7.  explain the relationships between area and perimeter, between area and volume and between volume and capacity of regular quadrilaterals.
  • How big is a decimeter – Home learning task to follow up/revisit volume
  • Perimeter-students use Google Earth (Confirm that it is working before you begin this lesson) and trundle wheels to investigate WAB’s perimeter. (2-3 periods) There is also a follow up activity where the students need to figure out how to measure a curved shape.
    • No BM on irregular shapes but an inquiry based and authentic activity.
  • Google Earth Area-Use Google Earth to find the area of these famous places.
  • Farmers Field (area and dimensions).pdf-Problem Solving. Grade 5/6 2011/12 Week 2 Answers here
  • Don’t Fence Me In.pdf (Area) Problem Solving Grade 5/6-2011/12 Week 6 Answers here
  • Paint problem.pdf – (Area) Problem solving task using knowledge of area of triangles and regular polygons.
  • A Lengthy Problem – Adaptable for either perimeter or area. Open ended problem solving with lots of possible answers. (1 period or Home learning task)
