At WAB, we use the Words Their Way Assessment to determine each students’ spelling level. The assessment resources can be found below. For instructions on how to administer and analyse the assessment, please refer to the Words Their Way manual or ask a member of the support services.
Elementary Assessment (suitable for majority of Grade 5 Students)
Upper Elementary Assessment (for those students who score 20 or above in the Elementary Assessment):
- Upper Spelling Inventory Test Sheet (photocopy both sides)
- Upper Feature Guide – To analyse student spellings from the inventory
- Upper Class Composite Record Sheet – To compile class results
Spelling teaching resources
There are numerous ways to teach spelling. Whichever method you use, students word lists need to be differentiated based on assessment data. They can develop their spelling word lists from a range of different sources. The Words Their Way word sorts, Unit of Inquiry key vocabulary lists, students’ own writing or reading.
