Purposes for Writing

To Describe

• Descriptive Writing-A full series of lessons. Takes at least 2 weeks.
• Descriptive writing lessons about a place and animal(6 periods)
• Compare and Contrast Ancient Civilizations (8 to 10 periods)

To Entertain-prose and poetry

• Historical Narrative analysis – pulling apart the pieces before writing task (1 period)
• Introduction to Historical Fiction 
• Historical Fiction Writing Assignment (2 weeks)
• The Mysteries of Harris Burdick-Write a story based on one of these famous illustrations-6 to 7 periods.
• The Mysteries of Harris Burdick – Short story write – 5 periods
• Advice on writing horror stories 
• End of Year Poem-a fun way to reflect on the year in grade 5. (2 to 3 periods)
• Classword-End of year-make a crossword about your class. (1 period)-Fun to compile all the crosswords, copy and bind into books for the kids to take away. A nice momento.
• Mystery Postcard (2-3 periods) Write a postcard and put clues into it so people can work out where you are.
